SYMPTOM GUIDE
Back Pain — Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Back pain is one of the most common reasons for medical visits. It can range from a dull ache to sharp, debilitating pain and may be acute or chronic.
Back pain affects approximately 80% of people at some point in their lives. Most episodes are mechanical in nature and improve with conservative treatment within 4-6 weeks.
However, persistent or severe back pain requires thorough evaluation to identify specific causes. Red flags such as neurological symptoms, unexplained weight loss, or fever require urgent assessment.
Dr. Kshiteez Puri provides comprehensive back care with emphasis on accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Mechanical back pain: Muscle and ligament strains from heavy lifting, poor posture, or sudden movements. This is the most common type.
Disc herniation: Bulging or ruptured discs can compress nerve roots, causing pain, numbness, or weakness radiating to the legs (sciatica).
Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal causing nerve compression, typically in older adults.
Degenerative disc disease: Age-related changes causing chronic low-grade back pain with periodic flare-ups.
Spondylolisthesis: Forward slippage of one vertebra over another causing instability and nerve compression.
