SYMPTOM GUIDE
Hip Pain — Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Hip pain is a common complaint that can significantly affect mobility and quality of life. It may originate from the hip joint itself or from surrounding structures.
Hip pain can be challenging to diagnose because it may arise from the hip joint, surrounding muscles and tendons, or even from referred sources like the lower back or sacroiliac joint.
The location of pain provides important diagnostic clues. Groin pain typically indicates intra-articular hip pathology, while lateral hip pain suggests trochanteric bursitis or gluteal tendon issues.
Accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment. Dr. Kshiteez Puri offers comprehensive evaluation and management of hip pain.
Common Causes of Hip Pain
Osteoarthritis: The most common cause of chronic hip pain in older adults, causing groin pain, stiffness, and difficulty with walking and stairs.
Trochanteric bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa on the outside of the hip causes lateral hip pain that worsens with lying on the affected side.
Hip labral tear: A tear in the cartilage rim of the hip socket causing deep groin pain and clicking sensations.
Avascular necrosis: Death of bone tissue due to reduced blood supply, causing progressive hip pain and collapse of the femoral head.
