SYMPTOM GUIDE
Knee Pain — Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, affecting people of all ages. It can result from acute injury, chronic conditions, or overuse.
The knee is the largest joint in the body and bears significant weight during daily activities. Knee pain can arise from any of the structures that make up the knee joint including bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, or bursae.
The location and quality of knee pain often provide important clues about the underlying cause. Anterior knee pain suggests patellofemoral issues, while medial or lateral pain may indicate meniscal or ligament pathology.
Proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Dr. Kshiteez Puri provides comprehensive evaluation and management of all causes of knee pain.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis cause gradual onset of pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Ligament injuries: ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL tears typically result from sports injuries or trauma, causing instability and pain.
Meniscus tears: Cartilage tears cause pain along the joint line, often with clicking, catching, or locking.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome: Pain around or behind the kneecap, common in runners and young adults.
Tendonitis: Inflammation of the patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon causes pain with activity.
Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae around the knee causes localized swelling and pain.
